WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Blake Moore (R-UT) will host a Telephone Town Hall with his 1st District Constituents from his office here in Washington on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Local residents can take advantage of that opportunity to speak with their congressman at 2 p.m. (Mountain Time) by calling (833) 305-1678.
The big news coming out of Capitol Hill recently has concerned the federal budget and Moore is in the thick of that heated debate by virtue of his membership on the Budget and Ways and Means committees in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In a recent newsletter to northern Utah constituents, Moore summarized deliberations that marked up a federal spending plan in the Budget Committee. In a marathon session lasting more than 12 hours, GOP committee members advanced a budget resolution that “… extends the Trump Tax Cuts of 2017 (which are set to expire this year), cuts $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion in federal spending over the next decade and enhances resources for defense and homeland security priorities.”
Importantly, he adds, the proposed budget resolution does all that while remaining deficit neutral, setting the federal government up for some deficit reductions as well.
Moore predicts a hard fight over the resolution on the floor of the House with Democratic members. Their opposition – “some of it sincere, some of it misguided and some of it outright false” – must be overcome before the “real work” on the accompanying policy can begin with colleagues on the Ways and Means Committee.
The other hot topic nowadays out of Washington is the effort by Elon Musk and his semi-official Department of Government Efficiency to reduce the federal deficit. Reportedly, the DOGE has already found more than $64 billion in potential cuts, many of them involving dubious foreign aid grants through the U.S. Agency for International Development. DOGE has also targeted the U.S. Department of Education for at least cuts if not outright elimination.
In his role as a co-chair of the DOGE caucus in the House, Moore will also involved in supporting the controversial deficit reduction initiative.
“With the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE),” Moore says, “we have a great opportunity before us to identify areas of government inefficiency, cultivate a solution-first approach to our challenges and reform our systems to better steward our resources and serve the American people.
“These issues are why I want to be in Congress and on these committees — to ensure a strong economy; support defense and Hill Air Force Base; reduce our deficits; and stop wasting taxpayer dollars,” he adds.
