BOX ELDER COUNTY — A 22-year-old man died early Thursday morning after crashing his vehicle while reportedly speeding without headlights on Interstate 15.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash at mile marker 360, just north of the Perry rest area, at approximately 1:58 a.m. Dispatchers initially received reports from a witness observing a white Hyundai Elantra traveling southbound at a high speed with its lights turned off.
Shortly after the initial report, the same witness discovered the Elantra had crashed off the right shoulder of the freeway.
Responders arrived to find the 22-year-old male driver had sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity pending notification of family.
According to investigators, evidence at the scene suggests the Elantra struck another vehicle traveling in the far-right lane before veering off the road. The second vehicle involved did not stop immediately following the collision.
Several hours later, a semi-truck driver contacted troopers in the Ogden area to report a crash. Investigators believe this commercial vehicle was the one struck by the Elantra.
The crash remains under active investigation as troopers work to reconstruct the sequence of events.
