SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced a global tribute and public funeral services for its recently deceased prophet and president, Russell M. Nelson, who died Saturday, Sept. 27, at his home in Salt Lake City. He was 101.
Nelson, who served as the church’s 17th president for over seven years since January 2018, was the world’s oldest leader of a global faith organization. Church officials confirmed that the regularly scheduled semiannual General Conference will proceed this weekend, Oct. 4-5.
Events honoring the life and legacy of the late leader will begin Wednesday, Oct. 1, with a special global broadcast. Titled “A Tribute to Russell M. Nelson,” the event is closed to the public but will air live at 10 a.m. The broadcast will feature remarks from several church leaders and musical performances by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. It will be available on ChurchofJesusChrist.org, YouTube and News Talk KVNU.
The public will have an opportunity to pay their respects the week following General Conference.
A public viewing is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.
The public funeral service will take place the following day, Tuesday, Oct. 7, at noon in the same venue. The funeral will be open to the public, ages 8 and older, but tickets will be required for entry. Tickets will become available online beginning Thursday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. Attendees must be seated no later than 11:30 a.m. Church office buildings on Temple Square will be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day.
For those unable to attend in person, the funeral will be broadcast globally, airing on ChurchofJesusChrist.org, YouTube, and News Talk KVNU. A private burial service will follow the funeral.
The church is inviting expressions of sympathy via President Nelson’s official Facebook and Instagram pages or an email address set up for condolences. In lieu of flowers, the church suggested contributions to its Humanitarian Aid Fund, which provides global assistance, or the church’s General Missionary Fund.
