LOGAN — A 26-year-old south Salt Lake man has admitted to driving to Logan to meet an undercover officer, who he had been chatting with about sexually abusing children. Giovanni Edward Robles-Montalvo accepted a plea deal that allowed him to be temporarily released from jail before sentencing next year.
According to court records, Robles-Montalvo appeared Nov. 18 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He pleaded guilty to 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, a second-degree felony. As part of the resolution, prosecutors agreed not to file anymore charges against the defendant.
According to prosecutors, Robles-Montalvo had been chatting with the Logan City Police officer about raping children and traveled to Cache County. He was detained by law enforcement without incident, at the prearranged location.
Robles-Montalvo reportedly admitted to police to chatting with the undercover officer. He also confessed to downloading child pornography in the past year.
Investigators searched Robles-Montalvo’s phone and found more than 10 photos and videos depicting the rape and sexual abuse of children by adults.
Following Robles-Montalvo waiving his right to a fair trial in court, Judge Brian Cannell agreed to allow his release to begin sex-offender treatment. He prohibited him from having any access to the internet or be around children, and undergo monthly polygraph tests.
Robles-Montalvo had been in the Cache County Jail since being arrested in July. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 20, and could face up 15 years in prison.
