LOGAN – The south Logan Walmart, 1150 South 100 West, was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after the store received a bomb threat. Gary Jensen, Logan City Police Chief said the threat was part of a nationwide scam attempt, targeting stores around the country.
“We don’t know a motive. We don’t know at this point who the caller might be, or even if the caller might be in the country,” said Jensen. “So we are in contact with the other police agencies. We’re also in contact with the F.B.I. at this point, trying to decide what their role will be, if any at this point. So, there are multi-jurisdictional issues at this point.”
According to Jensen, store customers and employees were evacuated after the store received the phone threat. Customers were told to leave their shopping carts and exit the store immediately.
Emergency crews blocked all entrances to the store’s parking lot for an hour, as police and store managers investigated.
Employees were moved to the west-side of the parking lot and waited until the store was cleared for re-entry.
The store re-opened at 2:30 p.m., 90 minutes after the threat was received.
Jensen said the threat appears to be a nation-wide hoax and is being investigated by the F.B.I. and local investigators.
