SMITHFIELD – The weeklong celebration of 100 years of Smithfield Health Days began on Saturday, May 3 and concludes Saturday, May 10 with a variety of activities.
A major part of the celebration will be the closing of Main St from 300 S. to 300 N. at 10 a.m. on Saturday until the end of the parade, approximately one hour. Alternative routs east and west of Main St. are options drivers can take.
There have been activities and celebrations during the previous week like kid’s bike races, fun runs, music competitions, golf tournaments, chalk art contests and a theater production.
Beginning at 8 a.m. the city will pay their respects to the American Flag with a flag ceremony at the fire station located at 116 N. Main St. Also at that time the Smithfield Chamber of Commerce will be serving pancakes at the Youth Center until 9:30 a.m.
The 100 years of Health Days will be held at the Youth Center starting at 8 a.m. and continuing off and on until 3 p.m.
The Douglas Rock Store Museum, located at 104 S. Main St., will be open for tours from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and then again from 12 noon until 3 p.m.
A history bus tour will leave from the Youth Center every 20 minutes from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. taking interested passengers to some of the local sites.
After the parade there are foot races, booths, inflatable toys, a car show, Arbor Day celebration and other activities will be held near the Forester Acres Booth. The horse pull will be held at the Forester Acres Horse Area. A skateboard competition will be held at Central Park Skate Park located west of Main St. from Center Street to 100 N.
For baseball lovers, the Smithfield Blue Socks will play a double hitter on The Blue Socks Field beginning at 5 p.m.
Alice in Wonderland Jr. will be performed at the Sky View High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. by the Youth Theater.
The conclusion of the celebration will be a fireworks display after dark.
