SMITHFIELD — Search and rescue crews and a Life Flight helicopter were called to Birch Canyon Tuesday afternoon on reports of a 13-year-old Boy Scout who was reportedly stuck on the side of a cliff.

The boy was reportedly with his group, hiking behind Flat Top hill when he fell.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Doyle Peck said one of the boy’s scout leaders was with the boy and was able to text another leader, who called 911.

Initial reports indicated the scout had fallen while hiking. He was unable to feel his legs and  unable to move off of a ledge.

When search and rescue volunteers reached the boy he was found to have just minor injuries to his legs.  He was reportedly in good condition and was able to hike out of the area.

A Life Flight helicopter, equipped with a hoist had been dispatched from Salt Lake as a precaution.

Once it was determined that the boy did not need medical attention the search and rescue was called off.
