SALT LAKE CITY — As Utah braces for soaring summer temperatures, Rocky Mountain Power is encouraging customers to reduce energy use and take advantage of cost-saving efficiency programs.
“More electricity is used by our customers during the summer season than at any other time of the year,” said Curt Mansfield, Rocky Mountain Power’s senior vice president of power delivery. “We encourage customers to take steps now to manage their energy use and take advantage of incentives to increase energy efficiency at home.”
The utility says it is well prepared to meet customer demand during peak hours, thanks to its diverse energy portfolio. Staff monitor substations and circuits daily and respond to usage spikes or system issues in real-time.
Electricity demand typically hits its highest levels between 3 and 8 p.m. on weekdays—when air conditioning units and irrigation systems are working hardest. To ease strain on the grid and lower bills, customers are advised to shift electricity use to mornings or late evenings, set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher (health permitting), and turn off unused lights, appliances, and electronics.
Rocky Mountain Power also recommends using ceiling and portable fans and opening windows during cooler morning and evening hours to bring in outside air.
