LOGAN — A 35-year-old Providence man was booked into jail Sunday night on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated kidnapping after he allegedly held a woman at knifepoint with a 14-inch machete and ordered her to bind herself with cable ties, according to law enforcement.
Trevor James Giblin was arrested Sept. 13 by Cache County Sheriff’s deputies following a domestic dispute at a residence where he and the alleged victim live in the basement of her parents’ home. In addition to first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping, Giblin faces charges of third-degree felony aggravated assault and class B misdemeanor threat of violence.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, deputies were dispatched to the home at approximately 9:39 p.m. after a family member reported that an intoxicated man had threatened the woman with a knife. Dispatchers instructed family members to leave the residence and meet responding deputies at a nearby church.
At the church, investigators spoke with the victim’s parents, who reported hearing their daughter screaming for help from the basement. Upon running toward her, they found the woman in severe emotional distress. The alleged victim’s father told deputies that after confronting Giblin, the suspect told them to call the police.
The alleged victim told investigators she and Giblin were discussing family issues when he temporarily left the room. He returned carrying a 14-inch machete and a package of plastic cable ties. Giblin handed the woman the ties and ordered her to restrain herself, threatening to harm her and their dog if she failed to comply.
Fearing for her life, the alleged victim defended herself and screamed for help, allowing her to break free and escape upstairs to her parents.
Deputies arriving at the home attempted to reach Giblin by phone without success. Shortly after, law enforcement stationed at the rear of the house spotted Giblin attempting to leave with his belongings packed into bags. Deputies held Giblin at gunpoint and took him into custody without incident.
Investigators later executed a search warrant on the residence, where they recovered the 14-inch machete and cable ties matching the alleged victim’s description. Giblin reportedly invoked his Miranda rights and declined to speak with deputies.
Giblin appeared Monday afternoon in Logan’s 1st District Court, appearing by web conference from jail. He was assigned a public defender and ordered to remain in jail temporarily until a formal bail hearing is held Sept. 21.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
