LOGAN — A 42-year-old Providence man has admitted to stealing a new truck from a Logan dealership. Anthony Michael Smith was originally booked into the Cache County Jail in February 2025 after a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
According to court records, Smith appeared May 4 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to theft of an operable vehicle and forgery, both third-degree felonies. As part of the agreement, prosecutors dismissed four remaining charges.
Logan City Police officers were called to investigate a theft in August 2024. Smith had reportedly purchased the new Ford F-150 truck, claiming to wire transfer $33,504 to the dealership.
When the company reported never receiving the funds, Smith claimed he had been involved in a family emergency but was on his way to the dealership with a cashier’s check from Bank of America. He never made it but had texted a photo of the check.
Police inspected the photo and reported that it appeared to be a generic sample check from the internet. Officials with Bank of America also reported Smith didn’t have an account with them.
Officers attempted to visit Smith’s residence and last known address in Layton several times unsuccessfully. His phone number was also disconnected.
Police tracked Smith’s social media account and determined that he had been in multiple states since the theft had been reported. Posts showed that he had traveled to Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming, while working as a mobile DJ.
Smith remains in jail without bail. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 27.
