LOGAN — A man died following an officer involved shooting in the Island neighborhood Wednesday, May 15. The incident occurred at Denzil Stewart Nature Park around 4:30 p.m.

Logan City Police Chief Jeff Simmons said detectives contacted an adult male as part of an investigation. While attempting to make an arrest, the suspect began to resist and produced a firearm which he fired at officers at close range.

An officer returned fire, striking the man.

Police immediately began CPR on the man and radioed for paramedics. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s identity was not released, pending notification of family.

Simmons said officers sustained non-life threatening injuries. They were treated at Logan Regional Hospital and later released.

The officer who fired at the suspect has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal review of the incident.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies including the Utah Highway Patrol, Cache County Sheriff’s Office and Utah State Police responded to the scene. They blocked off a portion of 100 South 560 East, while evidence was being gathered.

Simmons said, pursuant with Utah Code 76-2-408 and the Northern Utah Critical Incident Protocol, an investigation is now underway into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Per the protocol, the Northern Utah Critical Incident Protocol Team will conduct the investigation. Once completed, the Cache County Attorney will publish an analysis of the incident.
