LOGAN — Police officers have released the identity of the man who died after being shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Right Hand Fork Canyon Monday afternoon.
Logan City Police Capt. Curtis Hooley said Jeremy Ray Swenson was pronounced dead after being taken by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital. The 30-year-old Hyrum man was shot and killed by the deputy who was responding to a welfare check.
Deputies were dispatched to the canyon area after receiving a call that Swenson was there and had been making suicidal threats. When they arrived on the scene, they reported seeing him pointing a gun at a woman.
Swenson refused to drop the weapon and then made a threatening motion with the gun toward deputies.
One of the deputies fired a single shot at Swenson, wounding him. After confirming the safety of him and the woman, deputies rendered first aid and radioed for emergency crews.
Swenson was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Because the shooting involved a deputy, the investigation is being handled by the Logan City Police Department.
Hooley said the deputy involved is on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. His name is not being released at this time.
Right Hand Fork was reopened Tuesday afternoon after dectectives cleared the scene. The case is being actively investigated.
