BRIGHAM CITY — Nucor Corporation has announced plans to build a $200 million utility structures production facility in Brigham City, marking the third such facility for the company’s Towers & Structures business unit. The project is expected to create approximately 200 full-time jobs and expand Nucor’s presence in the western U.S., where demand for utility infrastructure is growing due to clean energy projects, data centers, and population growth.
The Utah facility will be located on Nucor’s existing Brigham City campus, located at 1050 Watery Lane. The facility is approximately 30 miles south of Nucor’s steel mills in Plymouth, creating efficient supply of materials via rail. The highly automated facility will include advanced hot-dip galvanizing operations and will complement similar facilities under construction in Alabama and Indiana. Production at those locations is expected to begin this year.
“Nucor has a strong presence in the West, and this new facility positions us to meet the region’s growing energy infrastructure needs,” said Leon Topalian, Nucor’s Chair, President, and CEO in a release. “As a global leader in sustainable steelmaking, we believe our nation’s energy infrastructure should be built with American-made low-carbon steel.”
The Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) and the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity (GOEO) are supporting the project through post-performance tax incentives. UIPA approved a property tax rebate of up to 30% over 25 years, while GOEO awarded incentives through its Rural Economic Development Tax Increment Financing (REDTIF) program. The incentives aim to foster economic growth and sustainable manufacturing in the region.
“This new facility marks a significant milestone as we scale operations to meet the increasing demand for utility infrastructure,” said Laurent De Mey, Vice President and General Manager of Nucor Towers & Structures. “Utah’s infrastructure and skilled workforce make it the ideal location for this investment.”
Local and state leaders welcomed the announcement, citing its potential to strengthen the economy and create high-quality jobs in Northern Utah.
“Nucor’s decision to expand in Brigham City reflects our community’s commitment to economic development,” said Mayor Dennis J. Bott in a release. “We’re proud to welcome this state-of-the-art facility.”
The collaboration among UIPA, GOEO, Brigham City, and EDCUtah has been instrumental in advancing this project.
“Nucor’s continued investment in Brigham City highlights their long-term commitment to manufacturing in Utah,” said Scott Cuthbertson, president of EDCUtah. “Their growing presence in Brigham City, now with multiple facilities, underscores the region’s strategic importance. Nucor’s focus on cleaner, more sustainable steel manufacturing sets a standard for innovation, and the addition of steel galvanization capabilities helps address supply chain needs within Utah’s manufacturing ecosystem.”
In April 2024, Nucor opened a new $35 million, 127,000 square foot insulated metal panel (IMP) manufacturing facility in Brigham City, bringing approximately 60 new high-quality manufacturing jobs to Box Elder County.
