BOX ELDER COUNTY — Several days after an explosion partially destroyed a building at the Northrop Grumman Promontory Facility, the corporation released an update regarding the investigation into the cause.

The blast happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16. The site is used for manufacturing and testing a component in solid rocket motor propellant, used for spaceships and missiles.

Photos of the blast showed the walls and roof of a two-story building completely blown away. A small fire was also still burning, producing a plume of smoke.

In a statement released Friday, a spokesperson for Northrop Grumman said they are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident. The building where the explosion occurred was used to produce an ingredient in solid rocket motor propellant and is one of many in their production network.

The Promontory site is one of several across the country that support our solid rocket motor production and testing. Promontory is a large property with over 800 buildings and nearly 20,000 acres of land.

Friday’s statement again confirmed that all employees in or near the building at the time of the incident safely evacuated, and no significant injuries were reported.

The spokesperson added that the incident would not impact ongoing programs, operations, or rocket motor production at the facility. Also, no solid rocket motors were lost or damaged.
