LOGAN — A 36-year-old North Logan woman is facing kidnapping charges for allegedly taking a young girl from her legal guardians on Saturday, according to law enforcement. Machaela Naomi Cevering was booked Monday into the Cache County Jail.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, North Park police officers were called to a North Logan home on report that Cevering had taken the little girl from her grandparent’s home, who had legal custody of the child. The alleged victim was eventually returned safely a day later.
Police questioned Cevering, who allegedly said she had gotten into an argument with her parents and got upset with them. She then admitted to taking the girl to her boyfriend’s house for approximately 24 hours.
Cevering was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Logan’s 1st District Court. She was charged with one count of kidnapping, a second-degree felony. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Cevering told the court “this was a misunderstanding.” She said that she had hired an attorney to represent her and asked to be released.
Judge Brian Cannell noted Cevering’s attorney was not present for the arraignment hearing to argue bail. He ordered the North Logan woman to remain behind bars and appear again in court July 21.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
