SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Mormon man who runs a website that offers doubting Latter-day Saints a forum to chat is appealing his excommunication from the faith.

John Dehlin of North Logan said Tuesday he believes he was unjustly ousted from the religion last month by regional church leaders who didn’t follow church protocol. Dehlin made public an 11-page letter he sent to church leaders laying out his case.

A regional leader with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints told Dehlin in a letter last month that officials made a unanimous decision to excommunicate him for apostasy, defined by the church as repeatedly acting in clear public opposition to the faith.

Church spokeswoman Kristen Howey said Tuesday in a statement that disciplinary decisions are always open to appeal and that the church will proceed accordingly.
