LOGAN — An 18-year-old Mendon man was arrested for sexually assaulting a woman at a local campsite, according to law enforcement. Benjamin Clayton Cheney was booked Tuesday, April 23, into the Cache County Jail.

According to an arrest affidavit, the alleged victim contacted Cache County Sheriff’s deputies, reporting Cheney had groped her while camping in the Cold Water Lake Campground, on the night of April 20.The woman claimed she had gone to sleep and woke up to find the suspect molesting her.

The alleged victim explained how she had not consented to any type of contact with the suspect, who was a relative.

Deputies questioned Cheney about the allegations. He reportedly admitted to inappropriately touching the victim for his own gratification, the probable cause statement explained.

According to jail records, Cheney was booked on suspicion of committing object rape, a first-degree felony; and forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. He is being held, pending arraignment on formal charges in Logan’s 1st District Court.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
