Construction is already underway at Logan’s southern gateway on a new road that will extend 100 West south over the Logan River to connect with US 89/91.

LOGAN – While most public attention is focused on revitalization efforts in downtown Logan, the city is also starting major improvements to its transportation infrastructure.

Those plans include traffic flow enhancements to the city’s southern gateway and its East/West corridors, according to Mayor Holly Daines.

Work is already underway on a major project to connect 100 West to US 89/91 with a new bridge over the Logan River and a new road from 500 South to the highway, she said in her 2022 State of the City address.

This $11 million project … has involved tremendous effort,” the mayor explained, “with long-term planning, multiple property acquisitions and major grants applied for and received.

“We appreciate significant grant funding through the Cache Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Council of Governments, which comes from the .25 percent sales tax we all pay to improve roads countywide.”

Construction crews are already making 100 West jog a half-block east at 600 South to connect with a new roadway behind the Adams Wealth Development on Main Street. That new thoroughfare will stretch south over the Logan River to connect with US 89/91.

“That will tie in nicely to the new Main Street pedestrian underpass at 600 South,” Daines added, “which will be designed this year and constructed next spring.”

That project, funded by a $4.1 million grant from the Utah Department of Transportation, will provide a safe connection for bikes and pedestrians under Main Street. It will also connect 17 miles of city trails east and west of Main Street, including the area of the river restoration project by Wasatch Properties from Main Street to 100 East.

The project plan calls for a 10 x 10 x 100 foot underpass to cross under the busy highway just north of the Logan River. Other project work will include turning 600 South Street into a cul-de-sac on the west side of Main Street; rerouting storm water channels; and repairing/installing landscaping, sidewalks and lighting.

“Another goal to help traffic flow is to improve the city’s East/West corridors,” Daines said. “The focus this year and next will be major work on 1000 North, from about 50 East to 250 West, including a stop light at 200 West.”

City officials say that traffic flow improvements will also be made on 1000 North at 1000 West, where the new COSTCO is being built, and eventually at 600 West.

Finally, they point to the realignment of the dangerous intersection at 700 North on Main Street as one already-completed project in their long-range traffic flow improvement plans.

Daines said that these beneficial projects are being funded with a combination of grants, Logan Redevelopment Agency funds and private dollars.
