LOGAN — A 23-year-old Logan woman, Cranessa Young was sentenced to one-year in jail for abusing her roommate’s six-month-old baby.
Judge Thomas Willmore angrily asked Young during Monday’s sentencing, how she could feel that abusing the child was just merely a mistake? He went onto describe how the baby was reportedly found with multiple broken bones, missing toenails and fingernails, and had scratches and bruises all over her body.
Young had earlier read a poem to the court, she had written from jail. It spoke about where she felt like her life was presently and what she wanted to change.
In August, Young accepted a deal with prosecutors pleading guilty to permitting a child to be exposed to a controlled substance, a third-degree felony. Part of the plea called for her to serve six-months in jail.
During sentencing, Judge Willmore said he thought Young deserved to be sentenced to prison. He asked prosecutor Barbara Lachmar, why the state had worked out a deal that called for such a short jail term?
Lachmar told the court, the evidence showed more of a lack in parenting education and not malicious abuse. She said, she was encouraged that Young was recognizing that her choices had led her to this point.
During a preliminary hearing in March, the baby’s mother, 25-year-old Teresa Hard, testified to seeing Young yank the baby by her legs and force bottles or pacifiers into her mouth.
Hard already admitted to biting the child’s hands and feet. In November she pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a charge of child abuse, a third-degree felony, and was also sentenced to a year in the Cache County Jail.
Judge Willmore, during sentencing, said Young was a danger to children and he felt like the plea deal limited him from being harsher. As part of the sentence, she was ordered to have no contact with children and was given credit for just 35 of the 111-days that she has already served since being arrested.
