Dr. Brian Richardson from Southwest Spine and Pain Center describes how Kyphoplasty can help people who have suffered a fractured spine.
LOGAN — When one Cache Valley woman fell at home, she didn’t expect a simple slip to change her life. But the pain in her back was immediate and relentless. After days of trying to rest and using over-the-counter meds, she still couldn’t stand or walk without severe discomfort. An X-ray revealed the problem: a vertebral compression fracture—a break in one of the bones in her spine.
Compression fractures are surprisingly common in older adults, especially those with osteoporosis. They’re also incredibly painful and can severely limit a person’s ability to move. According to the team at Southwest Spine and Pain Center in Logan, early treatment is key to regaining mobility and preventing long-term complications.
Dr. Richardson, an Army veteran and Mayo trained MD, says, “Compression fractures are by far the most painful condition we treat in our practice. Not only are they the most painful, but they are the most debilitating and are associated with significant morbidity, and even mortality, if left untreated”
What Is a Vertebral Compression Fracture?
This type of fracture usually occurs in the middle or lower spine when a bone (vertebra) collapses due to trauma or weakened bone density. Even a minor fall or lifting something too heavy can cause it.
People with compression fractures often feel sudden, sharp back pain that doesn’t go away. Without treatment, the pain can become so intense that it leaves people stuck in bed or a chair—leading to more health problems like blood clots, pressure sores, and declining strength.
A Minimally Invasive Solution Available in Logan
This procedure is done right here in Logan at their outpatient surgery suite. A small balloon is placed inside the fractured bone to make space, and then medical cement is injected to stabilize the area. The entire process is minimally invasive and typically takes less than an hour.
Most patients walk out the same day feeling dramatically better—many report their pain improves before they even leave the clinic.
The Benefits Go Beyond Pain Relief
“Kyphoplasty has made a huge difference in the lives of our patients,” says Dr. Mark Sabin, a Logan-based physician at Southwest Spine and Pain Centerwhotrained at Mayo Clinic. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see someone walk in barely able to move, and leave feeling like themselves again.”
