LOGAN – With Utah in the midst of wildfire season, Logan officials are reminding city residents that their electrical service may be interrupted by emergency procedures to mitigate fire dangers.

In the midst of wildfire season in Utah, Logan officials are reminding residents to be aware of the possibility of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) by Rocky Mountain Power in an emergency situation to mitigate fire dangers (Image courtesy of Logan Light & Power).

Those procedures might include a Public Safety Power Shutdown (PSPS) imposed by Rocky Mountain Power.

City officials explain that Logan purchases power that comes over electrical transmission lines owned by Rocky Mountain Power. The regional power supplier can legally shut off power to its retail and transmission customers when dangerous fire weather conditions exit, including periods of high winds, dry vegetation and low humidity.

While such PSPS outages are temporary, city officials warn how long they last depends on weather conditions and the time it takes to make sure it is safe to turn the power back on.

Residents can prepare for power outages by making sure to have an emergency preparedness kits with water, non-perishable food, flashlights and a battery powered radio.

City officials also advise residents to have backup power as well as a plan for medical devices or medicines with heat sensitivity.

They also advise residents to only use generators in safe and well-ventilated areas.

To stay informed during a potential PSPS outages, residents can sign up for the Logan emergency alert system – now provided by Everbridge — by going online to https://member.everbridge.net/107925548826629/new

Unfortunately, a PSPS outage isn’t something that city officials can control.

Logan City Light & Power is committed to providing residents with information regarding service interruptions in the timeliest manner possible, however, by working with Rocky Mountain Power to make sure we have good communication between utility service providers.
