LOGAN — A 37-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to prison for molesting several young girls years ago. Cesar Orozco-Rubio was taken into custody by court bailiffs after apologizing to the victims.
Orozco-Rubio was sentenced June 23 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to two counts of attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child, amended to a second-degree felony; and attempted sex abuse of a child, a third-degree felony.
According to prosecutors, a woman contacted Logan City Police officers in January 2022, reporting years of sexual abuse by Orozco-Rubio, who was a close family member. The abuse occurred for around six years after the defendant moved to Logan from Mexico.
The then 27-year-old victim told police that the abuse started slowly when she was around 9-years-old. It progressed to around several times a week for several years until she was 15. The defendant, who would have been between 16 and 20-years-old at the time, was charged with groping and sexually abusing the girl regularly.
During Monday’s sentencing hearing, a victim’s advocate read a letter from one of the women sexually abused by Orozco-Rubio. She asked the court to sentence the defendant to prison, writing how the abuse had “huge impacts” on her life, leaving her with suicidal thoughts, and feeling “betrayed and gross.”
Through a Spanish interpreter, Orozco-Rubio apologized for his “poor choices.” He asked the court for mercy so he could continue raising his family.
Judge Spencer Walsh told Orozco-Rubio, the trauma and pain you’ve inflicted on the victims has been serious and the impact can’t be understated. He recognized that even though the crimes began when the defendant was teen, they still continued for several years after he was an adult.
Orozco-Rubio was sentenced to two consecutive terms of three-years-to-life in the Utah State Correctional Facility, meaning he won’t be eligible for parole until 2031. He was given credit for 29 days previously served in jail.
