LOGAN — A 37-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to serve more than a year in jail for assaulting a woman repeatedly two years ago. Courtney Edward Wood, who was previously convicted of beating a woman and threatening to shoot her, was ordered to more than 15 months but given credit for the time already served since being arrested Oct. 24, 2022.

Wood was sentenced Monday, March 25, in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to three counts of attempted aggravated assault, amended to a third-degree felony.

According to prosecutors, a woman contacted Logan City Police officers Oct. 3, 2022, explaining how Wood had abused her multiple times during the past year. During one incident, she described how he pushed her against a wall by her neck and lifted her off of the ground.

The woman explained how he would also strike and pull her hair, pin her to the ground and lock her inside their residence. She described a “pattern of emotional abuse and how [Wood] would control her,” police reported.

During another incident, the woman described how Wood held her down by the neck and covered her mouth and nose, as she screamed for help. She explained how he knocked her unconscious during another assault.

The woman provided officers with pictures of some of her injuries, including bruising on her legs, arms, neck and face. She said most of the abuse occurred while Wood was drinking.

In February 2020, Wood was convicted of severely beating a woman and threatening to shoot her. He was ordered to serve one year in jail, followed by 36 months probation, after claiming he didn’t remember the assault because he was drinking and taking methamphetamine.

During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Jeanne Campbell said they disagreed with the facts of the case but accepted responsibility for what happened. She explained how the relationship between her client and the victim was “not good.”

Wood apologized for his actions and said he wanted to move forward. He expressed a desire to be a better part of society.

The victim told the court how Wood threatened, manipulated and controlled her. She said he had shown a pattern of abusive behavior.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Joshua Nemeth said it was obvious that the impact Wood had on the victim was lasting and deep.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck told Wood, “this type of behavior can’t continue.” She advised him to take responsibility and change his actions.

Wood was sentenced to 477 days in jail, while being given credit for time already served. He will be on probation for the next 36 months, while also being required to complete substance and domestic violence treatment.
