LOGAN — A 37-year-old Logan man has admitted to abusing two young girls for years. Rusty Lynn Jacobs accepted a plea deal that will likely keep him from being sent to prison.
Jacobs appeared last Wednesday, Jan. 10, in Logan’s 1st District Court. He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated child abuse, a second-degree felony. As part of the agreement, a remaining charge was dismissed by prosecutors.
Last December, Logan City Police officers received a report of possible child abuse. The two girls described multiple incidents in which Jacobs would physically punch, slap or throw items at them.
During interviews at the Cache Children’s Justice Center, the children described to investigators how the abuse resulted in bruises and marks on their arms, legs and head. In one incident, one of the girls described being dragged up the stairs, hitting her head and causing her vision to be blurry. The other child spoke about having various items thrown at them.
The girl’s mother told investigators the abuse had occurred between 30-60 times. She also claimed the suspect had threatened her with physical violence and manipulation.
Police questioned Jacobs as part of the investigation. He first denied ever physically disciplining the girls but later admitted to popping them in the face or nudging them with his foot. He later claimed to have anger issues.
During his court appearance, Jacobs waived his right to a trial. He expressed hope of staying in jail and receiving treatment.
Cache County Deputy Attorney Griffin Hazard explained that as part of the plea deal, attorneys would recommend a jail sentence instead of prison.
Jacobs remains in the Cache County Jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 28.
