LOGAN — A 31-year-old Logan man with a history of violence has been ordered to serve more time in prison for stabbing a woman in the eye two years ago. Armando Vincent Erives was given the maximum sentence after a judge expressed concern that the defendant was a high risk to the community if released.

Erives was sentenced Monday, Nov. 13, in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to aggravated assault, a second-degree felony.

Prosecutors report, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies were called May 31, 2021, after the victim drove to a stranger’s house, seeking help after being stabbed in the eye and escaping from Erives. She was transported to the hospital with a serious laceration to her eye. It was later discovered that her nose was fractured and lacerated as well.

The woman told deputies that Erives had attacked her and stabbed her in the eye with a small edged object. He then took her cellphone so she couldn’t call for help.

Investigators later learned that Erives had absconded from his parole officer by refusing to charge his ankle monitor and continued to evade law enforcement. He was located in Hyrum and arrested.

During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Stephen Allred admitted his client’s actions were “terrible.” He expressed hope the defendant would gain insight while incarcerated to make better choices.

Allred, who has been incarcerated for 896 days since the crimes occurred, refused to speak and had previously not offered any excuse for what happened.

During her statement, the victim asked the court to sentence Allred to the longest time possible. She said her life changed after the attack, losing her job, car and residence. The woman explained how she was “living through hell,” being half-blind and still required more surgeries.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Joshua Nemeth told the court how the impact of the crime on the victim was “beyond description.” He noted how Erives had numerous violent offenses, and deserved life in prison, with no benefits or favors.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck sentenced Erives to a term of one-to-15-years at the Utah State Correctional Facility. The sentence will run consecutively to the defendant’s other unrelated crimes, meaning it will be up to the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole to determine when he is released.
