POCATELLO, Idaho — Three people, including a suspect, are dead and two others were injured following a shooting and subsequent police standoff in southeastern Idaho on Friday afternoon.
Dispatchers received reports of three people shot on Tank Farm Road in northern Power County shortly before 2:40 p.m. Responding emergency crews found two people dead and one injured. The injured victim was taken by ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center and was in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon.
During the initial investigation, authorities located the suspect hiding near the Portneuf River. Investigators then heard additional gunshots and discovered a fourth victim had been shot. That person was flown to an area hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.
Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but law enforcement officials said the individual brandished a firearm and presented a threat. Officers responded with deadly force, and the suspect died at the scene.
Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. The names of the deceased have not been released pending family notifications.
“Our thoughts are with the families of those lost today and those recovering in the hospital,” Bannock County Sheriff Kasey Kendall said. “We are grateful for the quick response of our deputies and regional partners who worked to ensure no further harm came to our community.”
Due to the officer-involved shooting, the Idaho Falls Police Department was called in to lead the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation, which remained ongoing at the scene Saturday. The Idaho State Police, alongside the Bingham and Bannock county sheriff’s offices, will lead the investigation into the initial shooting.
More than a dozen local and state agencies assisted with the response, including Idaho Fish and Game, Portneuf Air Rescue, and several regional police and EMS departments.
