LOGAN — The City of Logan is inviting the public to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Logan Library on Monday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m.

The groundbreaking will be held on the plaza at City Hall, on the west side of the construction site.

Mayor Holly Daines made the announcement at the regular meeting of the Logan City Council on April 5.

“I’ve been working with the city for a long time,” said council member Tom C. Jensen. “It has always been on the docket, a new library. So congratulations.”

City council chair Jeanne F. Simmonds said that she was “very excited” for the new library.

Daines said that she shares the credit for the library project with the library’s staff, the city staff and the members of the city council.

“We’re a good team,” she explained.

At the ceremony, Daines will announce a significant lead gift and other generous contributions to kick off the fundraising campaign. The donations will allow the city to add special features to enhance the library for the users.

The new library will be on the same site as the former library. Demolition of the former library began in February and site work is now underway.

The construction budget is $16 million.

The new library will be a 35,000 square foot building on three floors with views of the surrounding mountains through glass windows.

There will be outdoor terraces on both the north and south ends of the building.

The main floor will feature a children’s area and community meeting rooms available to the public. The second floor will have space for youth activities. The third floor a quiet reading space for adults and a special collections area.

Daines explained that the library was founded on April 18, 1916, making the date of the groundbreaking the library’s 106th anniversary.

“We thought that date was appropriate (for groundbreaking),” according to Daines.

By building vertically, there will also be space for an outdoor library plaza and additional parking.

Construction of the new library is expected to take about sixteen months. During that time, the Library is housed in temporary quarters at the Logan City Service Center, located at 950 West 600 North in Logan.

During construction, patrons can request materials online, by phone for curbside pickup or take advantage of very limited browsing opportunities at that location.

Story times and other outreach activities are also available at other locations. Patrons can check the Library website for more information.

The library was designed by Hacker Architects of Portland, OR, who specialize in library design, in partnership with local architectural firm Design West.

The general contractor for the library project is Hogan Construction
