LOGAN — The Logan City Police Department is warning residents about a series of text messages that are attempting to steal money and personal information from local community members. The scams are similar to other messages appearing to be sent from neighboring government agencies.
Logan City Police Lt. Brett Randall said local 911 dispatch operators have received several calls during the past day from citizens, inquiring about the validity of the messages. Several other people have gone to the police department, questioning whether or not the messages are legitimate.
The scammers are claiming to be from the police department or other government entities. They reportedly tell the recipient that they have outstanding parking tickets and must pay immediately. Other messages claim the citizen missed jury duty or need to register their vehicle.
In each case, the scammers provide a link or phone number, where citizens are asked for their personal and credit information. Some have reported the links will appear to be legitimate.
Randall said, if people receive similar calls or texts, simply hang-up on the caller or delete the message. Do not click any links, respond to the text, or provide any information.
Similar messages and calls have allegedly appeared to be from other law enforcement agencies in the state, the Department of Transportation, Utah Courts and utility companies.
The Logan Police Department encouraged everyone to spread the word about the scams, especially to friends, family, and neighbors who may not be aware of these scams.
Randall also said if someone is unsure whether a message is legitimate, contact law enforcement directly before taking any action.
