LOGAN – Just when you thought that all the usual local liberals would be out on Saturday protesting the war with Iran, it turns out that Mar. 7 has been previously reserved for the Stand Up for Science (SUFS) National Day of Action.
That demonstration, which is being publicized locally by the Cache County Democratic Party, is slated to be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Cache County Historic Courthouse, mirroring other protests across the country.
Organizers of the pre-planned nationwide protests say the avowed goal of those events will be “… to take back our science, health and democracy.”
The primary target of the demonstrations will be Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., according to the official Stand Up for Science website, but there will likely be plenty of vitriol left over for President Donald Trump.
Appointed by Trump to head the Department of Health and Human Services, RFK, Jr. is a former environmental lawyer, author and outspoken critic of vaccine policies. Adding insult to injury, he is also the son of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, both Democratic icons.
Since being narrowly confirmed by the Senate, RFK, Jr. has become the administration’s appointed leader of the Make American Healthy Again (MAHA) initiative.
Trump launched the Make America Healthy Again Commission to confront chronic disease, improve nutrition and lower healthcare costs.
The White House says Trump administration has advanced reforms targeting childhood health, food quality and preventive care while increasing transparency and accountability in healthcare systems to lay the foundation for a healthier, stronger nation.
Unions representing fellows at the National Institutes of Health and several universities organized Stand Up For Science in the spring of 2025 in response to MAHA, saying that commission’s political attacks directly affected their livelihoods and ability to conduct research.
The ad hoc group’s website explains the Stand Up for Science (SUFS) is a political action organization dedicated to defending America’s scientific ecosystem, which they say is a cornerstone of democracy, freedom and progress.
At demonstrations held in Washington and state capitols around the county in March of 2025, the organization’s leaders dismissed the so-called reforms by Trump administration as “authoritarian power grabs” that have dismantled the nation’s premier science institutions and threatened the health of Americans.
According to the national SUFS website, details of events, volunteer sign-up and pop-up protest information can be found by going online to https://www.standupforscience.net/march7
The Cache County Historic Courthouse is located at 199 North Main Street in downtown Logan.
