LOGAN – Cache County Democrats will hold their annual county convention on Saturday, Mar. 28 in the auditorium at Logan High School.
That event will begin at 1:30 p.m., according to Shannon Rhodes, the chair of the Cache County Democrats.
As was the case with the Democrats’ party caucus on Mar. 17, their county convention will be an open event for anyone interested in attending, not just party loyalists.
“The county convention is usually the first opportunity for many to hear directly from candidates about the issues they care about and to learn why the candidates are running,” Rhodes explains.
Local candidates running on the Democratic ticket include Allison E. Goulais opposing JoAnn Bennett for the Logan District 2 seat on the Cache County Council; Mark A. Nafziger opposing incumbent Sandi R. Goodlander in Logan District 3; and Lizette Villegas opposing incumbent Mark R. Hurd in Cache County’s Northeast District 5.
In local races for seats in the Utah Legislature, the Democrats are supporting Barbara J. Haggerty against incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Petersen in House District 2 and Kendra Penry against incumbent Rep. Casey Snider in House District 5.
In the race for the seat in the 2nd Congressional District (which encompasses Cache County), four Democratic candidates have filed to run against incumbent three-term U.S. Rep. Blake Moore. Those candidates are Peter Crosby, a senior data analyst supporting higher education from Providence; Tyler Farnsworth, a mental health nurse practitioner from Salt Lake City; auto financier Ian Parrish; and U.S. Army veteran Jarom Gillins.
Rhodes emphasizes that the county convention is also an opportunity for local residents to run to be state delegates.
“In the current world, with so much happening daily, people want to feel like they are doing something to make their community better,” she adds. “Becoming a state delegate and ultimately voting for candidates who want to improve our community is an important job.”
The Cache Democrats are hoping that the local convention will build on the enthusiasm shown at the County Caucus on Mar. 17, when triple the number of expected participants turned out.
“We worked hard to find many great candidates from diverse backgrounds …” Rhodes explains. “We hope people come, engage and share with us how we can help them and leave with a better understanding of how these candidates can improve their lives.”
Local political activists are also being encouraged to turn out for another “No Kings” protest on Mar. 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cache County Historic Courthouse to show resistance to the policies of the Trump administration and what organizers brand as an “illegal war” with Iran.
Rhodes notes that the Cache Democrats County Convention has been deliberately scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in order to avoid conflicting with that demonstration.
Logan High School is located at 162 West, 100 South in Logan.
