Logan — Emergency crews responded to an active gas leak in Hyrum after a lightning strike damaged underground utility lines, according to city officials.

The incident occurred in the area of 150 N. 675 West when lightning struck a tree and traveled into the ground. The Monday night strike damaged surrounding natural gas infrastructure and severed a section of the city’s underground power lines.

Responders were initially unable to safely access the scene to begin repairs while awaiting clearance from the gas utility. In the interim, Hyrum City workers worked to reroute power to restore electrical service.

Local authorities are asking the public to stay clear of the area and seek alternate travel routes while emergency personnel and utility crews continue to make repairs.
