In Northern Utah and Southeast Idaho, a collection of communities experienced notable transformations between 2020 and 2023. According to the latest U.S. Census data, some communities grew by as much as 25% in population over that short period of time, while others saw declines in their community populations.
The Rising Stars
Tremonton saw a substantial growth rate of 25.44%, making it the fastest-growing area in Northern Utah and Southeast Idaho. The city became a hub for new developments and infrastructure improvements, drawing families and also concerns about how quickly the city has been expanding. Not only was it the community with the highest percentage growth in Box Elder, Cache, Rich, Bear Lake, Franklin and Oneida counties, but also the highest number of new residents. The city grew by 2,443 residents from 2020-2023.
It wasn’t the only community in Box Elder County to experience significant growth. Mantua realized a 19.67% increase in population.
Hyrum City emerged as the fastest growing community in Cache County, with a 15.93% increase in population over those few short post-pandemic years, going from 9,434 residents to 10,849. Nibley and Providence, with growth rates of 12.79% and 12.76%, respectively, saw an influx of young families and professionals.
St. Charles experienced the highest percentage growth in Bear Lake County with a 14.11% increase, but in a small community even small gains can yield large results. The community on the shores of Bear Lake added 23 residents to its less than 200 total full-time population.
Preston, the largest city in Franklin County, saw a notable population increase of just under 10% at 9.23%.
Communities Holding Steady
Even though Logan gained over 2,400 residents, the largest city throughout the six county area grew by only 5%. Brigham City, the largest city in Box Elder County, experienced a modest increase of 1% in population. Montpelier, located in Bear Lake County, saw a steady increase in population with a 2.72% growth rate.
In Oneida County, Malad saw a modest population change with a 2.00% increase.
Communities with Declining Numbers
Mendon and Snowville experienced slight declines of 0.67% in population, with single digit losses each. Mendon saw a decline of -5 while Snowville reduced in population by two people.
