LOGAN — A jury trial has been scheduled for a 39-year-old Logan man facing 17 charges, including rape of a child and object rape.

Cody C. Smith was in 1st District Court Tuesday morning for a pretrial conference.

Smith’s attorney asked Judge Brian Cannell to schedule a jury trial, saying he and state attorneys had been unable to come to an agreement regarding the charges Smith is facing.

Smith is accused of encouraging a teenage girl and her boyfriend to engage in sex, while in his home. The girl has also testified previously that Smith fondled her multiple times.

Judge Cannell scheduled a jury trial to begin June 23. Smith was also ordered to return to court on June 3 for a final pretrial conference.

Smith’s attorney has said the charges filed against his client are a “charade” by Smith’s ex-wife.

Smith was arrested March 11 by officers with the Utah State University Police Department. They are investigating the case because Smith had worked for both the Logan City Police Department and the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.

He is being held in the Cache County Jail on an $80,000 bail.
