LOGAN — A 20-year-old Hyrum man has been ordered to serve one year in jail for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl last year. Jaime Miguel Cordero was escorted out of a courtroom by bailiffs, as his family members cried and told the defendant that they loved him.
Cordero was sentenced June 2 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; and, four amended counts of sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor.
According to prosecutors, Logan City Police officers began investigating Cordero after the victim reported to her school leaders that she had been sexually assaulted by a family friend. She disclosed that Cordero had been at her house because he was friends with her brother.
The girl told police, after going to bed on the night of Feb. 25, 2024, Cordero entered her room and began groping and assaulting her. She reported he also bit her neck and forehead.
Police reported the victim had slight bruising on her neck. Several family members also reported how Cordero had been seen “sneaking” around on the night of the incident, according to the Probable Cause Statement.
When officers questioned Cordero, he reportedly said he had been consuming “a large amount of alcohol” on the night of the incident. He claimed that all he could remember was “play fighting” with the alleged victim.
During Monday’s sentencing, Cordero said his actions were inexcusable, although he reiterated that he had an alcohol problem. He acknowledged to causing the victim a lot of pain and flushing his own pride down the drain.
Judge Spencer Walsh ordered Cordero to serve 364 days in the Cache County Jail, with no credit for time previously served. He also ordered him to pay a $1,500 fine and be placed on the sex-offender registry.
