Caribou County Sheriff’s deputies report 76-year-old Kendall Lee Atkinson of Hyrum drowned Tuesday afternoon, in Blackfoot Reservoir, north of Soda Springs, Idaho.
Sheriff Ric L. Anderson said deputies received a call of a man floating face down in the reservoir at 1:38 p.m. While marine deputies and paramedics were traveling to the scene, a second call was received confirming Atkinson had drowned.
Atkinson was seen earlier in the day, fishing in a yellow aluminum boat. Other anglers who had seen him reported that he had told them he was have a fun day of fishing.
Anderson said Atkinson’s boat was later spotted going in circles at full speed with no one on-board.
Atkinson was found floating about 200-yards from the boat and was not wearing a life jacket.
Anderson said there was a lite wind at the time but investigators are unsure how Atkinson fell out of the boat. He reportedly had been camping at the reservoir.
Anderson reminds everyone to wear a life-jacket when on the water and don’t go alone.
