LOGAN — A 33-year-old Honeyville man has admitted to stealing almost $4,500 from his employer. Michael Lee Maxwell was arrested last November, following an investigation by the Logan City Police Department.
According to court records, Maxwell appeared April 7 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to theft, amended to a class A misdemeanor. As part of the resolution, three remaining charges were dismissed.
According to prosecutors, in September 2024, a manager of the business contacted police officers, reporting Maxwell had made fraudulent refunds and stolen the money associated with the credits. The crimes had occurred between May and September.
The manager reported that Maxwell no longer worked for the company. He had admitted to stealing the funds when confronted by management.
Investigators reviewed the documented refunds, which showed at least 22 separate, fraudulent transactions. The records showed approximately $4,454.79 was taken from the company.
Police questioned Maxwell at the time of the investigation. He reportedly explained how he would record fraudulent refunds associated with previous customer transactions on the store’s computers and then take cash out of the register.
Maxwell is currently out of jail on $5,000 bail. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 19, and could face up to one year in jail.
