SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Spencer J. Cox praised the courage and patriotism of Ukrainians in the face of Russian aggression and asked Utahns to support Ukraine during a rally at the Utah State Capitol Monday evening.

“To the 1,500 Ukrainians that live here in Utah, we love you and are united with you,” said Cox. “I also want to say something to the hundreds and thousands of Russians that live here as well, we do not hold you responsible for the acts of a madman.”

The governor called Ukrainians’ willingness to fight for their homeland inspiring.

Cox was joined by Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, Senate President Stuart Adams (R-Layton), House Speaker Brad Wilson (R-Kaysville), and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall along with many lawmakers and other government officials. Earlier Monday, the Utah Legislature unanimously voted to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Cox also emphasized that this is Putin’s war and urged the world not to retaliate against innocent Russian people.

“I believe Ukrainians are fight for the very things that sit at the very foundation of our own country. They are fighting for natural laws and self-evident truths and unalienable rights. They are fighting for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They are fighting for liberty and justice for all.”

The flag of Ukraine flew above the east side of the state Capitol, freeway signs changed to “Utah Stands with Ukraine,” and state universities and private businesses throughout the state showed their support by projecting yellow and blue lights on buildings and outdoor features.
