FRANKLIN COUNTY, Idaho — The Franklin County Fire District announced Monday, July 22, it will no longer issue permits for the retail sale of fireworks around the July 24th celebrations, effective immediately.
The decision comes after an individual was charged with reckless burning for a fireworks-related fire on Little Mountain in Franklin. The fire district cited Title 18, Chapter 70 of the Idaho Constitution regarding reckless burning.
The district also reiterated that the use of aerial fireworks remains illegal in Idaho. While warnings were issued this year for illegal fireworks use, officials stated that citations will be issued next year. Individuals found responsible for starting fires could face criminal reckless burning charges and be held liable for suppression costs. The recent Franklin fire, for instance, cost nearly $15,000 to extinguish, while larger fires can incur millions in costs.
This new policy does not affect fireworks sales permits already issued for this year’s July celebrations.
