LOGAN — A former candidate for the Logan Municipal Council is going to remain in jail for up to a year for possessing a large amount of drugs and other crimes. Erin Elisabeth Bennett said drugs had hurt her mental illness, and she hoped this would be a turning point in her life.
Bennett was sentenced June 9 in Logan’s 1st District Court. She previously accepted a plea deal in four cases, pleading guilty to three felonies of possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, and misdemeanors of interference with arresting officers and stalking.
According to prosecutors, the Cache Rich Drug Task Force served a warrant to Bennett’s home on February 3. She originally refused to let them in or cooperate with their search of the residence.
Agents report they found a “large grey container” in the laundry room of the home. Inside were several large plastic sealed bags of marijuana. A smaller, sealed bag of the same drug was found in a back bedroom.
Bennett was originally arrested in July 2022 after agents with the Cache Rich Drug Task Force served a warrant to her home. Police had received an anonymous tip several months earlier, reporting she was dealing marijuana.
Police reported Bennett’s car was then tracked driving to California and Oregon.
Task force agents were waiting for Bennett when she returned to Logan. They searched her car and found close to five pounds of psilocybin mushrooms and $14,000 in a suitcase. They later obtained a warrant to search her home where they found 300 doses of LSD and several marijuana plants.
During Monday’s sentencing, Bennett apologized for the “bad decisions made and harm” caused to the victims. She expressed relief for having the drugs seized from her home, allowing her to change her life.
Cache County Deputy Attorney Joshua Duty asked the court to send Bennett to prison. He said the defendant’s actions have had impacts on individuals and the community as a whole.
Judge Spencer Walsh ordered Bennett to serve one year in jail and 36 months of probation, explaining how drugs had impacted her mental health. He gave her credit for time served and good time.
Bennett was one of six candidates to run in the November 2023 General Election, vying for three open seats on the Logan Municipal Council. She came in last, getting only 7 percent of the votes. During a debate, she spoke about her life as a recovering drug addict.
