LOGAN — A 42-year-old former Logan man has been arrested and transported to the Cache County Jail on allegations of raping a child repeatedly more than 15 years ago. Jose C. Nunez was booked into the Cache County Jail April 1 after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Nunez was arraigned during a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Wednesday morning, appearing by web conference from jail. He was charged with rape of a child, two counts of sodomy on a child, and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies.

According to the warrant affidavit, Logan City Police officers began investigating Nunez after the now 26-year-old victim described a history of sexual and physical abuse by the suspect, who was a family member. The abuse allegedly occurred multiple times a week for several years, while the girl was 12 to 16-years-old.

The crimes are estimated to have occurred around 2007, while the suspect and alleged victim lived in Logan.

In February, the alleged victim confronted Nunez at his employment in St. George. The meeting was recorded by law enforcement. During the meeting, the defendant was seen crying and heard saying that he “regretted many things in life.”

During Wednesday’s hearing, defense attorney Wayman Stodart entered pleas of “not guilty” to each of the charges. He asked for time to consider whether or not they would request a preliminary hearing.

Nunez is currently being held on $100,000 bail. He was ordered to appear again in court May 11.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
