BRIGHAM CITY – State officials here have announced that starting on Saturday, April 4 the regular auto-tour route at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (BRMBR) will close temporarily for repairs.

An alternative auto-tour route will be available to refuge visitors while control structures along the regular route are improved and replaced.

That alternative route is a 12-mile, one-way vehicle route easily accessible from West Forest Street in Brigham City. Maps detailing the new route will be available at all refuge kiosks and at the BRMBR Visitor Center.

On April 4, staff members at the refuge are inviting bird lovers to join them in observing the opening of the alternative route during a 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. free celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

In order to honor the importance of spending time outdoors in our nation’s public lands, the refuge will be hosting a special “Wild Wonders of the Bear River” event day on April 4 with the grand opening of three special features, including the new Auto Tour Route.

The staff of the refuge will also play host to a special “Flags Across America” celebration where special American flags will be flown during the event.

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is located where the Bear River flows into the northeast arm of the Great Salt Lake, protecting the marshes found at the mouth of the river.

Surrounded by arid desert lands, these marshes are the largest freshwater component of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem and are an oasis for waterbirds and other wildlife.

For information about the anniversary celebration events, visitors are advised to contact the refuge staff inside the BRMBR Visitor Center or go online to bearriver@fws.gov
