LOGAN – The field of candidates hoping to win elective offices in Logan’s upcoming municipal election became somewhat more crowded as of June 4.
On of the third day of the week-long filing period for candidates, another five hopefuls have joined the fray, adding their names to the six who had already signaled their intent to run on June 2.
One new candidate, Alanna Nafziger, has joined the race for mayor.
The other newcomers are Gail B. Yost, Kristi Fatuesi and Katie Lee-Koven, all of whom are now in the running for one of the two at-large seats on the Logan Municipal Council.
Incumbent council member Ernesto López has also filed for re-election to that elective post, according to City Recorder Teresa Harris.
The addition of those five candidates brings the total number of individuals in the running for three elective posts to a total of 11.
Four candidates are now in the running to replace outgoing Mayor Holly Daines. They are Nafziger, Mark A. Anderson, Lewis Roesberry and Matthew P. Fatuesi.
Nafziger is the manager of the Utah Conservation Corps Urban Community Farm and a volunteer member of the Wilson Neighborhood Steering Committee.
The three candidates who had filed previously for seats on the municipal council are Joshua Michael Molitor, Melissa Dahle and Reilly Samuel Fatuesi.
The at-large council seats up for grabs in the November election are now held by incumbents Amy Z. Anderson and López.
An instructional designer for online courses at Utah State University, López joined the Logan Municipal Council in October 2020 to serve out the unexpired term of former councilmember Jess Bradfield. He was subsequently re-elected to the at-large position in November of 2021.
Yost is a retired USU instructor as well as a community activist, a behaviorist and a human services specialist. She is a habitual council-watcher who often speaks during the “Question and Comments” section of the municipal council’s agenda.
Lee-Koven is the executive director and chief curator of the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art on the campus of USU. She ran unsuccessfully for a council seat in the municipal election of 2023.
Kristi Fatuesi is an administrator in the Department of Aerospace Studies at USU.
The window for candidate filings will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 6.
Persons interested in becoming a candidate for office must file a Declaration of Candidacy in person with the Logan City Recorder, 290 North 100 West, Logan, Utah, during regular office hours between June 2 and June 6.
The filing forms are available at the City Recorder’s Office. There is no filing fee.
