LOGAN — A 33-year-old father, Ryan Udy, was sentenced to four months in jail and three-years-probation for physically abusing his infant son.

The Logan man appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday, after pleading guilty in April to one count of child abuse, a third-degree felony. He spoke only briefly and said he wished to apologize to everyone involved.

Udy was arrested in April 2013 accused of abusing his infant son several times, breaking his arm, and causing bruises and other injuries. The abuse was reported to have happened in March 2013 and December 2012.

During Tuesday’s sentencing, defense attorney Erin Byington told the court, Udy had tried to move forward with his life. He received anger management counseling and had been sober for more than three-years.

Still, state attorney Jacob Gordon said the severity of the crime merited a prison sentence. He explained that what happened to the child was violent and that he was repeatedly injured.

Judge Maynard questioned though, why prosecutors reduced the charge from a second to a third-degree felony, as part of their plea agreement. He said based on Udy’s criminal history, a presentence report was only recommending probation.
