LOGAN — A 25-year-old West Jordan man died Saturday morning in a single vehicle accident, near the mouth of Wellsville Canyon, US 89/91.
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry said Weston Robert Love was pronounced dead at the scene, near milepost-16.
UHP troopers first received a call at 8:11 a.m., reporting a body was seen in a field near the side of the road.
Perry said when troopers arrived on the scene they first located a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, finding the engine was still warm. They then located Love who was already deceased.
From the investigation, Perry said it appears Love was alone, driving north-east on US 89/91 at a high rate of speed, approximately 90 mph. He was traveling on the inside lane when his tires hit the rumble strips, near the median.
Perry said the strips appear to have frightened Love, causing him to turn the Cherokee to the right sharply. He then left the roadway, went down an embankment, sheered a fencepost, ran into a ditch bank and flipped twice end-over-end.
Love was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the Cherokee, through the front windshield. He was found approximately 45 feet away from where the vehicle came to a rest.
Perry said there were no witnesses but investigators estimate the accident occurred between 7:30 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. It is believed the accident was caused by the high rate of speed which could have cause the Cherokee to drift to the median.
Investigators are also considering the possibility that Love fell asleep while driving or was blinded temporarily by the sunrise.
Perry said Love’s family did not know why he was driving into Cache Valley, Saturday morning.
An investigation into the accident is continuing.
