SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The number of students enrolled in Utah’s public colleges and universities is up nearly 3 percent this fall compared with the same time last year.

Officials with the Utah System of Higher Education say there were nearly 176,000 students enrolled in classes as of the third week of the fall semester. That’s nearly 5,000 more students than last fall.

The number of students taking the equivalent of a full-time course load is up nearly 2.5 percent year-over-year.

Utah Commissioner of Higher Education Dave Buhler says the system anticipates adding 52,000 more students over the next decade and will need enough legislative funding to ensure college is accessible and affordable to all students.

Eight in ten Utah high school graduates who enroll in college go to a Utah public institution.
