Both Utah Republicans and Utah Democrats are holding state conventions Saturday where numerous political decisions will be made by both parties. A new Utah Pioneer Priorities Project Survey, conducted by the Utah Foundation, shows that only 24 percent of the Republican delegates are women while Democrats have 47 percent going to the convention who are women.
On KVNU’s For the People program Thursday, research analyst Christopher Collard said one change noted this year was the ages of delegates.
“In past years, delegates have tended to be older than the respective voters of their party,” explained Collard. “When we did this in 2010 and 2012, over one half of the delegates were over 50 years old. This year that has shifted.
“There has been a shift toward the younger generations having more representation among the delegates. So now this year over one half of the delegates are under 50. That is especially true among the Democratic delegates.”
Collard said most delegates are more extreme in views than typical voters. Republican delegates are more conservative and Democrat delegates are more liberal than their counterparts.
