LOGAN — Officials have closed Logan Canyon, US-89, due to a wildfire that ignited Tuesday afternoon. The blaze is reported to be by Ricks Spring, near milepost 478.

Logan City Police dispatch operators confirmed the highway is closed from First Dam to Garden City, to allow firefighters space to battle the flames.

According to emergency radio traffic at the time of the fire, the first crews on the scene reported multiple “spot fires” burning along both sides of the highway. The flames were being fanned by strong winds.

Utah Fire Info managers report the Rick Springs Fire is estimated at 70 acres and is burning in heavy timber. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Police dispatch operators were not able to estimate how long the canyon might be closed. It was already scheduled to close tonight for a construction project near Beaver Creek Lodge.
