CACHE COUNTY – At their regular meeting on Sept. 24, the members of the Cache County Council approved 18 season road closures affecting travel into the backcounty of Cache Valley.
Thirteen of those roads are slated to close on Friday, Nov. 15 (weather permitting), according to Matt Phillips, the county’s public works director. The remaining five roads will close on Sunday, Dec. 1.
The roads slated to close on Nov. 15 are 3200 West, Birch Canyon Lower, Gnehm Road, Ivan’s Hallow Road, Long Divide Road, Mount Pisgah Road, Short Divide Road, Deep Canyon Road, Maple Bench, Three Mile Creek and Mineral Point Road.
Closing on Dec. 1 will be High Creek Canyon Road, Millville Canyon Road, Smithfield Dry Canyon Road, Ant Flat Road and Lake Town Road.
Most of those seasonal winter gate closures will be in effect until April 15, 2025, in accordance with County Resolution 2024-22, Phillips added.
These closures are intended to protect public safety, reduce maintenance costs, maintain water quality and prevent erosion during snowy and icy conditions.
Specifically, the county council members approved winter gate closures for the following roads:
- 3200 West (Old Canyon Road and 8500 South) – This road provides access from Old Canyon Road to Mount Pisgah Road. The gate closure will be at the north end of Old Canyon Road.
- Birch Canyon Lower Road – This road provides access to Birch Canyon. The gate closure will be at the bottom gate. Additional gates located higher in the canyon will be closed by the U.S. Forest Service and private owners.
- Gnehm Road (3400 North) – Public works officials explain that this is a gravel road that starts in North Logan at 1600 East and 3400 North, loops up to the base of the mountains and then turns into Hyde Park Canyon. The area affected by the winter gate closure is a small portion of the road in the middle of the loop.
- East Canyon Road/Le Plata – This road begins at the South Canyon Road and run along Porcupine Dam ending at Davenport Road. The road will be closed at the west end of Porcupine Dam.
- Ivan’s Hollow Road – This road is a short section of gravel located northeast of Richmond. The winter gate closures will be at the bottom near High Creek Road and at the top near Upper High Creek Road
- Long Divide Road (8200 West) – This road begins just north of Newton at the intersection of 7800 North and continues to the Box Elder County line. This road will be closed in both Cache and Box Elder counties. The closure in Cache County is located at 7800 North and 8200 West.
- Mount Pisgah Road – This road runs from US 89/91 near Sardine Summit east to Paradise. This road will be gated from the east side of the intersection of 2400 West and on the west side near US 89/91.
- Short Divide Road – This road runs from Clarkston to the Box Elder County line. This road is closed in both Cache and Box Elder counties. The closure in Cache County is located near 9200 West and 9950 North at the Clarkston City Limits.
- South Canyon Road – This road runs from Avon to Liberty in Weber County. This road is closed in both Cache and Weber counties. The gate on the Cache County side is located approximately two miles south of Avon. This closure also affects other mountain roads including Three Mile canyon, Davenport Road, Flint Grove and Blue Bell Mine.
- High Creek Canyon Road – This road provides access to High Creek Canyon. The gate closure will be at the bottom of High Creek Canyon near 12900 East where the gravel road begins. Additional gates located higher up in the canyon will be also closed by the Forest Service.
- Millvile Canyon Road – The closure of this road is that the deer fence at the bottom of Millville Canyon.
- Smithfield Dry Canyon Road – This road provides access to Smithfield Dry Canyon. The gate is located at the bottom of the canyon where the gravel road begins near the Smithfield city limits.
- 2200 South (Maple Bench) – This is the gravel road that runs from the intersection of 2200 South and 6400 West, ending at the Maple Bench/Cold Water Trailhead. The Road will be gated at the intersection of 2200 South and 6400 West.
- Deep Canyon (1000 South) – This road runs from the Mendon Coty limits to the Deep Canyon Trailhead. The closure will be near 7200 West, at the snowplow turn-around.
- Three Mile Creek — This road is located west of Mendon at the end of 600 North. The closure of this road is at the end of 600 North near the snowplow turn-around.
- Ant Flat – This road runs from Hwy 101 near Hardware Ranch to Hwy 39 in Weber County. This road will be closed in both Cache and Weber counties. The closure in Cache County will be just south of Hwy 101.
- Lake Town Road – This road begins at Hardware Ranch, where Hwy 101 ends, and continues to Round Valley in Rich County. This road will be closed in both Cache and Rich counties. The closure in Cache County is located just north of the Hardware Ranch parking area. This closure will also affect the Peavine and Baxter Sawmill mountain roads.
- Mineral Point Road – This road is located between Porcupine Dam and Ant Flat Road, running across Cinnamon Creek Wildlife Management Area. The road will be closed at the WMA parking area off Ant Flat and will pertain to other road in the WMA.
