LOGAN – Easter egg hunts are a long-standing tradition in Cache Valley and across the country. Many children look forward to scrambling to get colored eggs every year. English Heritage website said eggs are associated with new life and spring.

Early Christians believed eggs were a symbol of the resurrection and an empty eggshell was a metaphor for Jesus’ tomb.

On Easter Sunday, early Christians fasted and to end the fast they feasted and celebrated. Eggs were a part of this celebration. This was also true for poor people who could not afford meat.

The Easter rabbit tradition goes back to Central Europe where rabbits or hares were associated with fertility and with the Virgin Mary.

Hares can be found in paintings in illuminated manuscripts of the Virgin and the Christ Child.
