SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Brigham Young University has made adjustments to its honor code after a complaint filed with the American Bar Association accused the school of discriminating against students who leave the Mormon church.
The October complaint from the activist group FreeBYU had sought amendments to the honor code to allow Mormon students to change their religious beliefs without being expelled from the university.
FreeBYU says the school made the changes three weeks after the ABA acknowledged the complaint.
The updated document says observation of the honor code may be enough to warrant an exception to the university’s ecclesiastical endorsement requirement.
A BYU spokeswoman says students deciding to leave the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints previously had the right to petition the university.
The changes only apply to BYU’s Provo campus.
